Martha Furnival

Martha was born in 1797 in Moreton cum Alcumlow, Astbury, Cheshire and her baptism took place on 24 December 1797 at St Mary's, Astbury, Cheshire.¹ Martha's father was Joseph Furnival and her mother was Martha Oakes. Her paternal grandparents were Daniel Furnivall and Ann Booth. She had a brother and two sisters, named John, Mary and Sarah. She was the second oldest of the four children. She died at the age of 63 in 1860.

General Notes
- Born in Moreton, Cheshire, in 1797.
  
  Her birthplace on the 1851 census originally appeared to be Marston, which is how Ancestry records it, but now I'm not so sure. Marston is near Northwich and Moreton is near Congleton which is where her first two sons were born. Therefore, it seems more reasonable to choose the latter, and the Thomas Bennion/Martha Furnivall marriage is feasible. The IGI baptism recorded in Moreton definitely confirms this.
  
  She appears as mother in the baptism records of John (1822), Mary Ann (1830) and Hannah (1837), where her name is given as Martha.

  Winnington. Aged 40. (1841 Census, HO107/97/5/6/P7)
  
  Winnington, Age 54 (Name recorded as Mary Benions) (1851 Census, HO107/2165/238/P15, Sch 60)
  This entry has led to the misapprehension in other reports that Thomas Bennion married a Mary in 1851, just in time for the census. I think this is highly unlikely and can find no evidence for such a marriage.
  
  Died in Northwich in 1860.

  There is also a Martha Bennion who is a lodger with George Newark in Over Lane, Over, widow and pauper, aged 60. Birthplace Over (1851 Census, HO107/2166/112/P30 Sch. 126). Over Lane, Bread Baker, Age 71 (1861 Census, RG9/2605/62/P39, Sch 211). Died in Winsford Q4-1868 (WI/11/016). However this latter Martha Bennion in unlikely to be Mary Ann Bennion's mother.
