Daniel Furnivall

• Birth Notes
  • Estimated birthdate 1744 from LDS IGI.
    
    A better estimate of 1746 comes from his marriage allegation, dated 7 Jun 1767, where his age is given as 21.
    
    The link shown here to his parents Randle and Mary is very tenuous, and is based solely on the speculation that he was the brother of Ellen Furnivall, who was married on the same day in a double wedding. In fact there is no other evidence for Daniel's birth, or that he is indeed Ellen's brother.

• Death Notes
  • Died in 1800 in Ollerton, Cheshire, but buried on 6 Jun 1800 in Astbury parish church.
    
    His will was made on 13 Mar 1800 and proved on 7 June 1800 in Chester. It leaves bequests to his three children: Joseph Furnivall, Ann Morrey, and Hannah Guest, and to his niece Betty Morry. It was witnessed by William Pedley, Thomas Booth, abd Mary Crimes.

• General Notes
  • Presumed to be Ellen's brother as he and she were married on the same day to the Booth twins, and therefore presumed to be the son of Randle and Mary Furnival. But I have not yet found a definitive baptism record for Daniel. The date here is only an estimate from the IGI, based on his marriage date.
    
    I have not found a baptism record for him in Astbury, Sandbach, or Alderley (where his parents were married). I have also searched the records for Warmingham without success, but they are very difficult to read in microfilm (low contrast).
    
    Also mentioned in Herbig family tree, but his wife there is suggested to be Ann Howarth. (In fact Ann Howarth appears to be the wife of an unrelated Joseph Furnivall, married 17 Aug 1768 in Astbury (LDS IGI).)
    
    However, in Daniel's will he is said to be a yeoman. Therefore it seems a little improbable that his father would be a tailor, as the baptism records for Sarah, Mary, and Ellen imply. This argues against Daniel and Ellen being brother and sister. Perhaps Ellen is Daniel's cousin, or perhaps there is another Ellen.
    However, notice that Mary Cumberbach's brother was named Daniel, so this is a likely name for her son, although it is unusual in the Furnival family.
    
    Another Daniel Furnival, b. 1764 in Moreton Say, Shropshire, is not this one - he married Eleanor Johnson in 22 Apr 1790 and was buried in Moreton Say in 1834 (LDS IGI)
    
    There is a Daniel Furnival Christening: 7 May 1738 Saint Botolph Without Aldersgate, London in the IGI,  but he probably married 23 May 1768 Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, London, England.
    
    Daniel's presumed parents of Randle Furnival and Mary Cumberbach may establish a relationship with the Furnivalls of Sandbach, but this is fairly speculative at present.
    
    The new FamilySearch pilot contains (in Cheshire Land Tax Assessments 1778-1832) the following tax assessment records for Daniel Furnivall:
    1781 - Northwich Hundred, Moreton-cum-Alcumlow, Newbold Astbury
    1782 - Northwich Hundred, Moreton-cum-Alcumlow, Newbold Astbury
    1783 - Northwich Hundred, Newbold Astbury
    1783 - Nantwich Hundred, Alsager
    1784 - Northwich Hundred, Newbold Astbury
    1785 - Northwich Hundred, Church Lawton
    1786 - Nantwich Hundred, Alsager
    1787 - Alsager
    1789, 1792-1795 - Church Lawton
    
    There is insufficient detail to determine whether these tax assesments relate to different people, or to different properties owned by the same person. It is interesting that none of these properties are in Ollerton, where Daniel made his final will, so maybe he had retired to Ollerton, perhaps because of failing health.
    
    The marriage record for Daniel's son Joseph states that he (Joseph) was from Lawton, which is consistent with the Land Tax records.
    
    Because of the difficulty in finding a birth record for Daniel, I wonder if he was adopted. There was a baptism for Daniel Pedley in Astbury on 6 Feb 1750/51 (LDS IGI) where only his mother Mary Pedley is recorded, and no father. The name Pedley recurs in Daniel Furnivall's will, where one of the witnesses is William Pedley. However, if Daniel Pedley is the same person as Daniel Furnivall, he would only have been 16 when he married Ann, which seems unlikely (although not impossible). It is even less likely that he would have been establised as a butcher/farmer at that age, though, especially if adopted by the tailor Randle.
    
    William Pedley was buried on 26 Jun 1750 in Astbury, so could have been Daniel Pedley's father. There was also a William Pedley paying Land Taxes in Eaton, near Congleton, in the 1780s and 1790s. This is most likely the witness to Daniel Furnivall's will.
