Richard was born on 6 January 1884 in Crewe, Cheshire. Richard's father was Joseph Pidcock and his mother was Selina Pinnington. His paternal grandparents were James Pidcock and Eliza Kennidy; his maternal grandparents were John Pinnington and Ellen Fleetwood. He had a brother and two sisters, named Charles, Ellen and Jessie. He was the youngest of the four children. He had two half-brothers named Christopher and George. He died due to natural causes or old age at the age of 81 on 12 September 1965.

  Occupation given as General Labourer in 1901 Census. He became a boilermaker at the "Sprinch" boatyard in Runcorn, and then later at the Old Quay workshops, Runcorn, for the Manchester Ship Canal company.
  He was profoundly deaf, supposedly due to an accident falling off a bus, but also an occupational hazard of his profession. As a "holder-upper" he would support rivets from inside a boiler while they were hammered flat from the outside.
  
  He was very skilled at metalwork and his home was filled with brass ornaments that he has made himself from metal "found" at work.
