Richard was born in 1742 in Skelmersdale and his baptism took place on 29 August 1742 at St Paul & St Peter, Ormskirk.  Richard's father was Charles Pinnington and his mother was Elizabeth Barrow.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Pinnington and Elizabeth Hewson. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Geoffrey, John, Gabriel, Geoffrey, Charles, Alice and Betty.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
