Charles was born in 1712 in Litherland, Liverpool and his baptism took place on 25 May 1712 in Sefton, Liverpool.  Charles's father was Richard Pinnington and his mother was Elizabeth Hewson.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Pinnington and Jane Cowper; his maternal grandparents were John Huson and Alice Whittle. He had four sisters named Anne, Jane, Ellen and Alice.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
