Thomas was born in November 1818 and his baptism took place on 29 November 1818 at St Helen's, Witton, Northwich, Cheshire.  Thomas's father was Thomas Senior and his mother was Elizabeth Jackson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Senior and Margaret Bromfield; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Jackson and Martha. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Joseph, John, Margaret, Maria, Mary Ann, Mary and Ann.  He was the sixth oldest of the eight children.
