John was born in 1816.  John's father was Thomas Senior and his mother was Elizabeth Jackson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Senior and Margaret Bromfield; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Jackson and Martha. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Joseph, Thomas, Margaret, Maria, Mary Ann, Mary and Ann.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
