Mary Ann was born in March 1816 and her baptism took place on 10 March 1816 at St Helen's, Witton, Northwich, Cheshire.  Mary Ann's father was Thomas Senior and her mother was Elizabeth Jackson.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Senior and Margaret Bromfield; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Jackson and Martha. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, John, Thomas, Margaret, Maria, Mary and Ann.  She was the fifth oldest of the eight children.
