Geoffrey was born in 1753 in Skelmersdale and his baptism took place on 18 February 1753 at St Paul & St Peter, Ormskirk.  Geoffrey's father was Charles Pinnington and his mother was Elizabeth Barrow.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Pinnington and Elizabeth Hewson. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Richard, Geoffrey, John, Gabriel, Charles, Alice and Betty.  He was the sixth oldest of the eight children.
