Betty was born in 1755 in Skelmersdale and her baptism took place on 5 October 1755 at St Paul & St Peter, Ormskirk.  Betty's father was Charles Pinnington and her mother was Elizabeth Barrow.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Pinnington and Elizabeth Hewson. She had six brothers and a sister, named Richard, Geoffrey, John, Gabriel, Geoffrey, Charles and Alice.  She was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
