John was born on 26 December 1767 in Rainford.  John's father was Richard Pinnington and his mother was Margaret Webster.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Pinnington and Elizabeth Barrow; his maternal grandparents were John Webster and Eleanor. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named Charles, George, Richard, Richard, George, Richard, Henry, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Catherine and Jane.  He was the second oldest of the twelve children.
