Catherine was born on 30 December 1781 in Windlle, St Helens.  Catherine's father was Richard Pinnington and her mother was Margaret Webster.  Her paternal grandparents were Charles Pinnington and Elizabeth Barrow; her maternal grandparents were John Webster and Eleanor. She had eight brothers and three sisters, named Charles, John, George, Richard, Richard, George, Richard, Henry, Elizabeth, Eleanor and Jane.  She was the eighth oldest of the twelve children.
