  • Always known as Jack.
    
    Lived first with his parents at the cottages known as Mount Serrat on Runcorn Hilll, but moved with them to 12 Castner Avenue when the cottages were demolished to make way for the quarry workings. He lived there until his marriage to Winnie Pidcock in 1945, when they moved temporarily to live with his sister Marie in Vicar Street, Runcorn.
    They were sold the house at 34 Market Street Widnes by John and Sarah Murphy on the understanding that they would look after Sarah's brother Paddy Nicholson, who lived with them until Paddy's death in 1950.
    
    Moved later to 128 Derby Road, Widnes.
    
    Educated at St Edward's Junior School, Runcorn.
    
    He joined the Manchester Ship Canal company where he first worked as a fireman (stoker) on the Daniel Adamson steam tug. He worked his way up to Second Engineer on the tugboat Quest, and also worked on the Puma(?), Rover, Sceptre, and Talisman. He was Chief Engineer when he retired.
    
    The job involved staying on board the tug for long period to help the ocean-going  craft to navigate the canal from Eastham to Salford. The shift ended wherever the tugboat ended up. Travel expenses were unheard of and public transport unreliable, so he would often be away from home for long periods in his early days. The shift system was later rationalised to 24hrs on duty followed by 48hrs off duty, so he was able to get home more often.
