Mary was born in 1780 in Alsager, Cheshire and his baptism took place on 1 November 1780 at St Bertoline, Barthomley.  Mary's father was John Cookson and his mother was Rebecca Croxton.  His maternal grandparents were William Croxton and Rebecca Bradford. He had a brother named John.  He was the older of the two children.  He died at the age of 65 in 1845.  His burial was on 9 November 1845 at St Bertoline, Barthomley.1
