Joseph was born in November 1818 and his baptism took place on 8 November 1818 at St Helen's, Witton, Northwich, Cheshire.  Joseph's father was Benjamin Senior and his mother was Sarah Holland.  His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Senior and Sarah Webb. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Robert, William, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth and Catherine.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
