Ellen was born in 1710 in Litherland, Liverpool.  Ellen's father was Richard Pinnington and her mother was Elizabeth Hewson.  Her paternal grandparents were Charles Pinnington and Jane Cowper; her maternal grandparents were John Huson and Alice Whittle. She had a brother and three sisters, named Charles, Anne, Jane and Alice.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
