John Havercan

John was born on 27 March 1881 in Park Lane, Oldbury, Worcestershire. John's father was James Havican and his mother was Maria Bowen. His paternal grandparents were James Havican and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were James Bohan and Bridget Cannon. He had seven brothers and a sister, named James, Matthew, Patrick, Thomas, Dennis, Michael, Bartholomew and Kate. He died at the age of 90 in 1971.

  Worked on canal boats in the Black Country (probably for Chance and Hunt of Oldbury). Believed to have been a "legger" through the Dudley tunnel. Moved to Weston, Runcorn. Lived at Birch Cottage, Weston at time of marriage (27 June 1914) and later lived in a cottage named "Mount Serratt" on Runcorn Hill (Weston Village), but perhaps Birch Cottage was just one of the collection of cottages known as Mount Serrat. Later lived at 12 Castner Avenue, Weston Point.
  
  Enlisted (No 78881) in the Cheshire Regiment on 12/12/1915. Mobilised 1/10/1918. Demobilised 31/5/1919.
  
  Family tradition has it that he became teetotal after his mother Maria drowned while looking for him when he had been out drinking. However, another story says that he was the first person in Runcorn to be convicted of being drunk in charge of a horse.
