James Bohan

James was born in 1826 in Tully, Leitrim and his baptism took place on 22 October 1826 in Fenagh, Leitrim. James's father was James Bohan and his mother was Catherine Gilheeny. He died at the age of 73 in 1899.

- James Bohan was baptised on 22 October 1826 in Fenagh Roman Catholic Parish, Co Leitrim. His address was given as Tully, and his parents were James Bohan and Catherine Gilheeny.
  
  I'm not absolutelly certain that this is the father of Maria Bowen (1847) but the parish and date are both correct so it is fairly likely.
  
  There was another James Bohan baptised 14 Sep 1824 in Cloone Parish. Address: Adoon.

- Born in Ireland (Co. Leitrim) about 1826. Probably his name was spelled as Bohan.

  All his children were registered under the name of Bohan, but all the census records after 1861 are spelled as Bowen.
  
  Must have arrived in England between 1847 (when daughter Maria was born in Ireland) and 1851 (when daughter Winifred was born in Oldbury). This was the peak of emigration from the Potato Famine. I cannot find any references in the 1851 census though, so perhaps they arrived precisely in 1851, but after the census.
  
  A manuscript that details some Bohan genealogy, by Ed Bohan, contains some interesting Bohan history, but nothing directly about James Bohan.
  
  The Bohan name in Leitrim is most common in the parishes of Mohill and Cloone.
