Maria Bowen

Maria was born in March 1847 in County Leitrim, Ireland and her baptism took place on 27 March 1847 in Fenagh, Leitrim. Maria's father was James Bohan and her mother was Bridget Cannon. Her paternal grandparents were James Bohan and Catherine Gilheeny. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, James, John, Winifred, Ellen, Catherine, Ann and Bridget. She was the oldest of the nine children. She died in an accident or as a result of an injury at the age of 54 on 4 November 1901.

  Mary Bohan was baptised 27 March 1847 in Fenagh Roman Catholic Parish, County Leitrim. Her address was given as Curbarrick, and her parents as James Bohan and Bridget Cannon.

Death Notes
- Death aged 52 in The Canal, Oldbury. Registered Q4-1901 West Bromwich (GRO 6b 490).
  Cause of death: Asphyxia from drowning 'Accidental death'.
  Certificate received from Arthur H Hebbert, Deputy Coroner for North Worcestershire. Inquest held 8th November 1901.
  
  The inquest was reported in the Smethwick Weekly News for Saturday, 9 November 1901:
  
  OLDBURY
  DROWNED IN THE FOG.— Yesterday morning an inquest was held at the Police Court by Mr. A. H. Hebbert (Deputy Coroner), respecting the death of Maria Havercan, aged 53, widow, formerly residing in a court at Halesowen Street, who was drowned in the Birmingham Canal, near her home, on Monday night.— It was stated that on Monday night deceased paid a visit to a friend's house, about five minutes' walk away from her home. She was missed, and on Tuesday morning Thomas Goddard, a blacksmith, found her dead body in the canal at Whimsey Bridge. It is supposed that deceased, who had to pass along the canal side, in the dense fog which prevailed at the time, walked into the water.— A verdict of "Accidental death" was returned by the jury.
