Sarah was born in 1744 in Ruyton of the Eleven Towns, Shropshire and her baptism took place on 22 January 1744 at St John the Baptist, Ruyton of the Eleven Towns, Shropshire.  Sarah's father was Robert Bennion and her mother was Esther Parks.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Bennion and Margaret Clark. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Edward, Robert, Mary, Jane and Mary.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
