Edward was born in 1747 in Ruyton of the Eleven Towns, Shropshire and his baptism took place on 12 April 1747 at St John the Baptist, Ruyton of the Eleven Towns, Shropshire.  Edward's father was Robert Bennion and his mother was Esther Parks.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Bennion and Margaret Clark. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Sarah, Mary, Jane and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
