Robert was born in 1760 in Ruyton of the Eleven Towns, Shropshire and his baptism took place on 13 January 1760 at St John the Baptist, Ruyton of the Eleven Towns, Shropshire.  Robert's father was Robert Bennion and his mother was Esther Parks.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Bennion and Margaret Clark. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Edward, Sarah, Mary, Jane and Mary.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
