Allen was born in 1715 and his baptism took place on 12 December 1715 at St Mary's, Astbury, Cheshire.  Allen's father was Moses Booth and his mother was Martha Beckett.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Booth and Sarah Simpson; his maternal grandparents were Allan Becket and Ellen Sutton. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, Charlotte and Mary.  He was the youngest of the five children. He had two half-sisters named Hanah and Sarah.
