Joseph was born in 1738 and his baptism took place on 1 January 1738 at St Bertoline, Barthomley.  Joseph's father was John Martin and his mother was Sarah Bostock.  His paternal grandparents were John Martin and Sarah; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Bostock and Katherine Wrench. He had three brothers and a sister, named James, John, Thomas and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
