John was born in 1748 in Skelmersdale.  John's father was Charles Pinnington and his mother was Elizabeth Barrow.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Pinnington and Elizabeth Hewson. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Richard, Geoffrey, Gabriel, Geoffrey, Charles, Alice and Betty.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
