Charles was born in 1756 in Skelmersdale and his baptism took place on 24 November 1756 at St Paul & St Peter, Ormskirk.  Charles's father was Charles Pinnington and his mother was Elizabeth Barrow.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Pinnington and Elizabeth Hewson. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Richard, Geoffrey, John, Gabriel, Geoffrey, Alice and Betty.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
