John was born in 1783 in Barthomley, Cheshire and his baptism took place on 14 December 1783 at St Bertoline, Barthomley.  John's father was John Cookson and his mother was Rebecca Croxton.  His maternal grandparents were William Croxton and Rebecca Bradford. He had a brother named Mary.  He was the younger of the two children.
