Richard was born in 1708 and his baptism took place on 4 January 1708 in Pontesbury.  Richard's father was Thomas Bennion and his mother was Margaret Clark.  His paternal grandparents were William Bennion and Elizabeth Postle; his maternal grandparents were Robert Clark and Mary. He had two brothers and a sister, named Robert, Joseph and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
