John was born on 8 December 1811 and his baptism took place at St Helen's, Witton, Northwich, Cheshire.  John's father was John Robinson and his mother was Jane Oaks.  His paternal grandparents were Isaac Robinson and Nancy; his maternal grandparents were John Oaks and Jane Oaks. He had a brother and three sisters, named George, Ann, Hannah and Martha.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
