James was born in 1836.  James's father was Thomas Pimlott and his mother was Sarah Robinson.  His paternal grandparents were James Pimlott and Elizabeth Poole; his maternal grandparents were Peter Robinson and Elizabeth (Betty) Bowyer. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Peter, Isaac, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth and Annie.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
