Thomas was born in 1771 and his baptism took place on 22 December 1771 at St Helen's, Witton, Northwich, Cheshire.  Thomas's father was Thomas Broomfield and his mother was Elizabeth Hill. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Richard, Thomas, Thomas, Ann, Margaret, Mary and Lydia.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
