Joseph was born in 1714 and his baptism took place on 19 February 1714 in Pontesbury.  Joseph's father was Thomas Bennion and his mother was Margaret Clark.  His paternal grandparents were William Bennion and Elizabeth Postle; his maternal grandparents were Robert Clark and Mary. He had two brothers and a sister, named Robert, Richard and Mary.  He was the youngest of the four children.
