Peleg Underwood

Peleg was born in 1769 and his baptism took place on 3 May 1769 in Woolpitt, Suffolk. Peleg's father was John Underwood and his mother was <Unknown>. He had two brothers and a sister, named Duty, John and Hannah. He died at the age of 61 in 1830.

Birth Notes
- There is a baptism record for an Underwood with an unknown first name on 22 Apr 1769 in Woolpitt, Suffolk. Parents are recorded as Rach... Underwood and Mildred, but this is inconsistent with the suggested father of Peleg as John Underwood suggested in "New Brunswick Loyalists: a bicentennial tribute".
  
  However, there is also a baptism record for John Underwood in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, on 20 Dec 1739. I suppose it is just feasible that the "Rach..." above could be a transcription error for a Latin version of John. Woolpit is 9 miles east of Bury St Edmunds.
  
  There is a baptism for Isabella Underwood in Suffok on 5 Aug 1781 with parents Jack and Mildred. This is probably the same family, so the "Rach..." above might well be Jack. If so, Isabella and Peleg would be 12 years apart, and they would have moved the Rhode Island before Isabella was 2.

  However, New Brunswick First Families suggests that John's children were: Duty, Peleg, John, and Hannah, and that John died abot 1848. If he was born in 1739, this would make him 109. (Probably 1848 is an unreasonable date for his death. If Peleg was born in 1769 then John's birth date of 1739 is not unreasonable, but John's death date of 1848 would be eighteen years after his son's.) Cronen Pedigree more reasonably gives 1848 as the death date of Peleg's son John)
  
  There is still a John Underwood in Woolpit in the 1851 Census.

- Originally from England, but later lived in Kings County, New Brunswick, Canada. Moved to Upper Canada (Ontario), then to Indiana. Raised a family with Susannah, but was widowed. Married Hannah Guest (née Furnivall) on 4 Jun 1820 in Floyd County, Indiana, USA.

  Probably he is the person recorded as Pelig Underwood in King's American Dragoons, Thompson's Troop in 1782.
  
  New Brunswick First Families suggests that Peleg's father was John Underwood from Newport, Rhode Island, died 1848. From "New Brunswick Loyalists: a bicentennial tribute" by Sharon Debeau, 1983.
  
  John Underwood sailed from Huntington Bay, NY, to St John, NB, on board the loyalist ship The Union in 1783.
