Joseph was born on 10 October 1810 and his baptism took place on 28 October 1808 at St Helen's, Witton, Northwich, Cheshire.  Joseph's father was Thomas Senior and his mother was Elizabeth Jackson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Senior and Margaret Bromfield; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Jackson and Martha. He had two brothers and five sisters, named John, Thomas, Margaret, Maria, Mary Ann, Mary and Ann.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 70 in 1880.
