A plaque outside the Church says:
This landmark building is known as "The Sailor's Church" and is dedicated to St Nicholas, patron saint of mariners. Liverpool became an independent parish by Act of Parliament in 1699 and replaced the chapel on this site with its own church. This has been rebuilt several times, most recently in 1952 after its destuction in the Second World War.
The oldest part of the church is its elegant tower added by architect Thomas Harrison in 1811 to replace one which has collapsed, killing 25 people including 21 girls from the Moorfield Charity school.
