Christ Church Salford was the centre for the Bible Christian movement, which was based on temperance and vegetarianism. The movement was founded in 1809 by William Cowherd, and was the foundation for the Vegetarian Society in 1847. Forty church members migrated to Philadelphia in 1817, where the Bible Christian Church remained active for another century, and in Britain the Church merged with other Methodists to form the United Methodist Church in 1909.
